The Artisan Story:

This cooperative was founded in 1989 in the outskirts of Guatemala City in a community called La Esperanza, which translates to "Hope." La Esperanza is known for its struggles with gang violence, illiteracy, unemployment, and various social issues. The cooperative was established to address these challenges by providing economic opportunities and community services to women from marginalized backgrounds, including mothers, widows, and others who are often the sole providers for their families.
  • Mission: The mission is to empower women through social and economic means, offering training in various crafts, and running a school, pharmacy, and bakery within the cooperative.
  • Growth and Recognition:
    • From a small health project, it has expanded into an 80-member business cooperative. It employs a diverse workforce including teachers, seamstresses, nurses, and more, all receiving fair wages.
    • In 2002, the cooperative was awarded the Best Non-traditional Textile Exporter by AGEXPRONT, highlighting its success in international markets. Additionally, their Montessori school received recognition from the Guatemalan government.
Product Line and Impact:
  • Crafts: Specializes in products like bags, purses, wallets, aprons, and holiday ornaments, all crafted from traditionally woven Mayan textiles. This not only supports the artisans but also promotes the work of local Mayan weavers, ensuring fair wages and prices across the supply chain.
  • Additional Ventures: Beyond crafts, they have launched a bakery, soy milk factory, and an internet center to diversify employment opportunities within La Esperanza.
